Rhode Island
Building on the design of R.I. Teachers and Technology Initiative, the partnership of RIDE, RI Foundation, and the University of Rhode Island modified the successful RI Teachers and Technology Initiative which has provided 60+ hours of technology-rich training and curriculum development work for approximately 30 percent of the states' teachers so that it would be appropriate for school leaders. RI will expand from the pilot year's training (80 principals and Superintendents) to reach approximately 200 principals and Superintendents with an intensive training regimen that focuses on using technology for data interpretation and community communication. The training involves 45 hours or workshops, product development, application training, and acquiring networking skills. The principal funding sources for the Rhode Island Technology Leadership initiative came from the Gates Foundation, Technology Literacy Challenge Funds (TLCF) and the RI Foundation, among others.
The Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology, Inc. (RINET), is a non-profit corporation operating exclusively in the State of Rhode Island as a collaborative partnership to support the needs of its K-12 educational community. This state-wide high speed data network is run by a consortium of Rhode Island educational and state government agencies. RINET offers Internet connectivity for Rhode Island schools, libraries, local government, and state government. The partners of the RINET consortium are: Rhode Island Department of Education, Brown University, The University of Rhode Island and the Office of Library and Information Services. The partnership members associate themselves to provide high quality and affordable technology services to public, independent non-profit, and parochial schools, and non-profit libraries, and other public schools in Rhode Island. RINET is sponsored by a collaboration of educational and government institutions, providing a multitude of services for Rhode Island educators such as Internet access, e-mail, listservs, and world wide web accounts.
