Developing Tools for teachers: Success Mississippi Style is an interactive CD that was developed by the MS Department of Education, Office of Technology, Training and Support. The purpose of the CD is to provide educators with examples of best practices for the infusion of technology currently being used in Mississippi's K-12 classrooms. These best practices are based on the most current research available including research conducted by ISTE, SEIR-TEC and NCREL. The videos in this CD were selected from many exemplary programs and teachers throughout the state for their ability to demonstrate the wide range of effective roles that technology can plan in teaching and learning. The CD's are used in technology integration training, in presentations, and in K-12 and university classrooms. In addition to the videos of actual Mississippi classrooms, the CD includes an opening narration by Morgan Freeman and Superintendent Richard Thompson, lesson plans from featured classes, links to the Mississippi curriculum framework and the Mississippi Teacher Exchange website, and selected excerpts from technology-related publications such as SEIR-TEC's Lessons Learned.
Tools for administrators:
The Mississippi Student Information System (MSIS) is a comprehensive statewide student information system that is designed to serve as a central repository for data collection and reporting of school and district data for state and federal reporting purposes. This web-enabled Oracle-based system provides schools and districts with access to information on students, teachers and administrators. The system collects data from school-level student administrative software via a common set of data elements that are transmitted in XML format to the MSIS database at the Mississippi Department of Education. Some of the benefits of the system include: MSIS provides schools with an electronic student transfer function, with up-to-date information on student achievement, immunizations, vocational education, and licensure. For data verification, both the new MSIS system and the previous MONEX system are being used by school districts this year. MSIS will be in full stand-alone operation in fall 2001.
