US Department of Education Flexibility Demonstration Projects Website

Date: ongoing
Contact: Jane Nesbitt, jnesbit@wested.org
Web site: http://www.neirtec.org/flexibility

This website contains tools and information on two little-known provisions of NCLB that increase states' or local districts' flexibility in using funds to support their student achievement goals. This is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Education and NEIRTEC.

The site has four main purposes:

  1. To guide you to information and resources about two federal flexibility demonstration projects, State-Flex and Local-Flex, authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), reauthorized in 2001, as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA),
  2. To advise you of upcoming virtual and face-to-face awareness events that will help you become better informed about the programs so that you can help your state or district determine its interest and readiness in applying for a program,
  3. To solicit your input on reasons why states and districts may be interested in this program and what states and districts view as barriers and challenges to applying,
  4. To provide information and perspectives on how Local-Flex can be used to further a district's goals based on the actual implementation of one Local Flex project.

This website highlights one local district's (Seattle) success with the Local Flex program, and includes their application, reports, an audio interview and many tools to assist you as you consider the use of Local Flex for your district.

Mission: Algebra -- Technology Promoting Student Success: A Resource for District Leaders

Date: ongoing
Contact: Alan Feldman, alan_feldman@terc.edu
Web site: http://www.neirtec.org/ma

Mission: Algebra is designed to provide guidance to district and school leaders in addressing the question: How can technology support teachers and students in getting students ready for Algebra I? The intended audience is school leaders - those with the responsibility to make program decisions or to advise decision-makers about these topics:

The site includes standards-based classroom examples and is grounded in standards, informed by the experiences of practitioners, and guided by available research and theory.

In addition to school leaders, we expect the site will be of high interest to a wide variety of educators as they address the new federal priority of getting all students ready for challenging mathematical content in high school (No Child Left Behind legislation).

The Knowledge Loom

Contact: Mary Anne Mather, Mary_Anne_Mather@brown.edu
Webpage: http://knowledgeloom.org/

The Knowledge Loom: What Works in Teaching and Learning website is a best-practice resource that spotlights key education topics. Two of the spotlights specifically target technology:

Each spotlight presents a specially organized set of literature-based practices; links to related resources; and stories about how selected schools, districts, and teachers have put the practices into action.

A companion guidebook, Using The Knowledge Loom: Ideas and Tools for Collaborative Professional Development supports the work of technology and curriculum coordinators by providing a structure for study groups and other school staff to reflect on their current work in relationship to the best practices in either spotlight and to develop strategies for improved teaching and learning. The Guidebook can be downloaded at http://knowledgeloom.org/guidebook/.
