NCLB Local-Flex Expert Panel

Go to Expert Panel Discussion Board

Why Participate?

Do you wonder how implementing the NCLB Local-Flex provisions might help your district achieve its goals? The applications for Local and State Flex are available to states and districts right now but many people wonder how the provision can really benefit them. What can you do with Local-Flex that you can’t achieve with the simple step of transferability? What are specific situations you want to know about?

Ask our Local-Flex Expert Panel your questions, converse with other participants and read responses from Friday, January 21 (beginning at noon EST) until February 4 (closing at Noon, EST). Our panelist include Jay Iman, Grant Manager, and Jane Goetz, Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, both of the Seattle Public Schools, and Sandra Scott, Principal of the Concord Elementary School in Seattle. Seattle is in its second year of Local-Flex and has just finished an evaluation of year one and the effect of the provision in helping them meeting their goals. Jane Nesbitt moderates the panel on behalf of NEIRTEC and can answer any questions you might have. Contact her at jnesbit@wested.org or 802-951-8214.

How Do I Participate?

It is easy to participate. Click on the link to join the discussion and you will be linked to a web board that will ask you for a simple registration and password. Just follow the instructions on the web board. You will be able to submit a question or comment and read what others have written. Direct your question to a specific panelist or to everyone. This is an asynchronous panel discussion that will continue over the course of 14 days. Panelists will make every attempt to answer your questions within 24 hours, and the record of all questions and answers will be available on this site indefinitely. While you can log in as a “guest” to simply read the discussion, you have to register to participate fully. The record of the panel will be archived in order to provide future visitors with information.

One hint: If you are just now beginning to explore the Local-Flex provision of NCLB, you might find it useful to go to the PowerPoint and audio introduction of how Seattle is using Local-Flex (http://www.neirtec.org/flexibility/example/Local-FlexSeattle.asp) or to the archived materials on “ One District’s Success Story”, also about Seattle’s experience (http://www.neirtec.org/flexibility/example/default.asp) prior to joining the Expert Panel. In addition, this site (http://www.neirtec.org/flexibility) has many other resources and links to help you gather enough information to determine if Local or State-Flex are programs that are right for you.
